Experience one of the world’s greatest natural wonders on a guided hike through the Samaria Gorge. The gorge is located in the Samaria National Park in West Crete and spans 16 km, from Omalos at a height of 1235 m to the village of Agia Roumeli at sea level.
With a width of 150 m at its widest point and 3 m at its narrowest, the gorge is home to over 450 species of plants and animals unique to Crete. Enjoy the beautiful nature, as you hike through this breathtaking landscape.
After the hike, we’ll travel by boat from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakia, where our bus will be waiting for you.The Samaria Gorge is typically open for hikers from May 1st to October 15th, weather permitting.

Your day begins early in the morning in Plakias as you board a bus to head towards Omalos. Once you reach Omalos, located at a height of 1235 meters, you’ll start your hike through the Samaria Gorge. The hike is a demanding physical activity, requiring good health and sturdy hiking shoes, but the stunning natural scenery makes it all worthwhile. You’ll explore the Samaria National Park, which is home to over 450 species of plants and animals, many of which can only be found in Crete. The gorge is 150 meters at its widest point and 3 meters at its narrowest, and the hike will take you all the way to the village of Agia Roumeli at the Libyan Sea.
Once you arrive at Agia Roumeli, you’ll have the opportunity to relax and enjoy the stunning coastal scenery. The village is charming and unique, with plenty to explore, including the abandoned village of Samariá, which was once inhabited and now serves as a refuge for the rare Cretan goat, Kri-Kri or Agrimi. You can also take a refreshing swim in the Libyan Sea or simply relax and take in the beautiful views.
After that you’ll travel by boat from Agia Roumeli to Chora Sfakia, where a bus will be waiting to take you back. The boat trip is an equally beautiful experience, giving you the opportunity to take in the stunning coastal scenery. You’ll arrive back in Plakias in the evening, tired but fulfilled after a day spent exploring the natural wonders of Samaria Gorge.
